Life Upgrade: YouTube Partner and Ordered the Sanyo Xacti VPC-CG10 HD camcorder

I’ve been through many camcorders on my channel so far. The FS100 has provided many great videos but I felt the step up to HD was necessary and I plunged for the Kodak Zx1 pocket HD Camcorder. This was amazing however was limited by its main selling point -- being compact. So I’ve decided to go for the Sanyo Xacti VPC-CG10 and go up another gear. Lets hope it works out!

YouTube’s gone proper WIDESCREEN

So for the astute of you out there who regularly watch videos online you’ll have noticed over the past couple of days the change to widescreen players on YouTube.  Now it used to be 4:3 and this was fine but with rumours of full films coming to YouTube you really need to have a widescreen view.  I’ve been recording in widescreen with my camcorder for a couple of years but it’s always been punished into a squashed 4:3 box and I do like the way which they look now. However for all of my previous videos which were converted to a widescreen size 1024 x 576 (more for my use than for YouTube) do not stretch and instead stay as a 4:3 size.

To get it properly done I experimented with loads of resolutions by converting my videos with Visualhub.  Loads. Then I uploaded them to YouTube and after I saw they weren’t right I deleted them to try again.  It may be just me but it seems they are a bit picky as to which resolutions work.  Finally I tried it another way neglecting Visualhub and trying Quicktime’s built in export feature.  Exporting to .mp4 with some slight changes eventually worked on 1280 x 720 with a data rate of 1500 kbits/sec on the H.264 codec.  It take a bit longer to transcode than normal so I don’t know whether I’ll do it for all my future videos I’ll have to see.  Tell me what you think below or in the comments on the YouTube page.  Thanks!

YouTube Channel Views Update

Hi all, I thought I would come over and thank you for your increased support on my Youtube channel. Since I started this site two months ago (yes it wasn’t that long ago) I have had over 27,000 new video views on my YouTube videos. I would also like to continue the push for subcribers, it’s really easy, just press the subscribe button on my YouTube channel or next to any of my videos and you’re done! Then you don’t have to go trawling through the internet to see my latest videos as you’ll get an email every week linking directly to all my new videos. You know it makes sense!

That’s enough publicity from me – short and sweet.

iPhone 3G 16GB Unboxed with first impressions

100_2186.JPGA year ago I thought the original iPhone looked bulky and not necessary as I had a 30GB iPod video and an o2 XDA. However since then I’ve sold my XDA and my iPod was involved in an accident and now ceases to function so with my situation changed my outlook on the iPhone followed suit.  The ease of not carrying an iPod and phone/pda separately was too big appeal to turn down and with the release of the new iPhone 3G my mind was made up. With the two variants of 8GB and 16GB I would have liked a bigger capacity, I was spoilt for space with my old iPod so when I downsized I knew I would have to be more picky with my music. As a result I opted for the 16GB model thinking I would fill about 40% with music 30% with videos/films and the last 30% with applications or other data.  That was my plan anyway…I’ll see how it worked out in the full review next week.

100_2187.JPGNow I’m not going to go through the labourous task of unboxing it by describing every single plug and cable that comes with it as I’m sure you’ve watched enough of them on youtube over the last month. You can see it quickly done in the video accompanying this blog post.

When I first took it out of the box I was amazed at how light it felt; I had expected it to weigh a couple of my old iPods but Apple have distributed the weight well and you won’t feel like you have a brick in your pocket.  This links with the new back curved design which psychologically makes you think its thinner but in fact it is slightly deeper than the original iPhone. I agree with many people who say that this plastic backing is prone to scratching and that is why I’m going to have a case on it 24/7 although its a shame to cover it as I believe its the best bit of the exterior. I’m in a bit of rush so I’ve kept in quick for now but the full review will be more in depth…

From what I’ve done so far with iTunes I have had no trouble syncing all my music and videos over so I have been scrolling over the App store for hours.  There are truly hundreds of Apps and with a majority being free there truly is something for everyone.  I’m going to continue my app quest and review some on my site and I’ll also post up a detailed review of the iPhone 3G next week.
