INtensions Review for the iPhone or iPod Touch

Here’s another interesting app review that requires a bit of logic and the use of your brain to outwit your opponent.  INtensions is available for 59p currently on the iTunes App store and is another one from LambdaMu games.  It is essentially a single/multi player experience of tact where you must choose the highest non-tied number every time to win points.  If more than one player (out of 3 opponents) choose the same number then neither of them win anything and the next person with the highest number could gain points.  It will take a couple of times of learn but once you get it going you’ll understand it in no time!

It’s quite satisfying when you start to beat the computer however it is even better when you’re beating real people and that is where this app shines best. Practice is good on the single player mode but the multiplayer is where it’s really at!  You can have up to 3 opponents and after choosing your own avatar you are all ready to go.  There are a preset selection of avatars however maybe it would have been nice to be able to choose one of your images from your photo roll so as to give it a bit more customisation.  This could make it clearer in multiplayer games at a glance but is more cosmetic than actually improving the game. While focusing on the looks, INtensions provides a clear user interface, maybe too clear.  It is easy to navigate yet it feels a bit bland and requires maybe a splash of colour or alternating backgrounds.  Potentially another small game would increase the replay value so it mixes it up a bit but definitely something to brighten up and enhance the experience would be welcomed.

So INtension is a real interesting game and when played with mates can prove exciting but it fell short in the single player mode and overall feels slightly cosmetically unpolished, so maybe with some more colours and sound effects the game would attract attention much longer!

Daily Shady Review for the iPhone or iPod Touch

photo.jpgIf you’ve ever played Sudoku, then you may be interested in another logic game, this time called Shady Puzzle. It’s really simple but, like Sudoku, you have to use your brain to follow the little rules to complete the puzzle. Check out shadypuzzle.com for more information but my review covers this apps ability to download the daily puzzle right to your device! Daily Shady gives you the easiest of interfaces and means you can have countless puzzles right in your hand!  Best of all -- it’s FREE! Simple!

Well I’m not going to explain exactly how the Shady Puzzle works, but it is really simple so just check out their website or the application itself, for the rules on how to play.  Concerning the running of the app I have had no bugs and downloads are near instantaneous over a Wi-Fi connection which is great.  I’d recommend to all users (although mostly iPod Touch users) that as soon as you have the app, download as many puzzles as you can so on the go you don’t need to download more. This makes for instant play time and means you can concentrate more on the solving of the puzzle itself!

So Daily Shady brings the web element of the Shady Puzzle right into your hand and does it perfectly.  There is a standalone version coming out soon which I will be reviewing so make sure you come back and see that soon. If you’re after something challenging and like solving Sudoku puzzles, why not try Shady Puzzle now with the free application Daily Shady on your iPhone or iPod Touch.

Photo Tweet App Review for the iPhone or iPod Touch

photo.jpgThere are many many Twitter applications for the iPhone and iPod Touch and this is yet another one.  However Photo Tweet doesn’t control all your Twitter mobile needs but instead takes on the image idea and that’s all it does.  Is it enough for a total separate app?

Available for 59p (a lite version is available for free) all Photo Tweet is, is essentially a photo uploader for the twitgoo service.  And it works exceptionally well for what it touts and I’ve had no bugs or problems running it. The only little niggle is a constant “Optimizing” message coming up everytime I boot the application which takes some valuable seconds.  A great advantage is the ability for the app to automatically resend the photo if you lose connection at all and I have tested this and it works brilliantly.

However what the app is, is also it’s biggest downfall.  It’s just a photo uploader.  Most twitter applications for the iPhone have all of this built in and there is nothing new here. But focusing on just the images is a unique niche idea and only a handful of other apps are trying this and this is where I believe Photo Tweet should expand.  From my experience there are many twitter picture hosts (twitpic, twitgoo etc.) and I think an easy option to select between these would be necessary, as I don’t feel the urge to suddenly stop using twitpic and reallocating my pictures to a new service which Photo Tweet is forcing me to.  Obviously this won’t be as much of a problem if you’re already on Twitgoo but I think it immediately can turn off some users.

The ability to save a photo tweet and schedule it for upload later is apparently contained in the app according to the iTunes description but I can’t seem to find it myself.  This is great for people in a hurry or if you’re a Pay as you Go customer who has no data usage and must wait for a WiFi hotspot.  My apologies if this feature is there but I think a way to make it more user friendly would be to add a Save button next to the Send button when you’re writing a tweet.  This way you could easily decide whether you want to send the photo tweet immediately or to save for later on.

I think the biggest opportunity for Photo Tweet to distance itself from competitors would be to offer image customisation to the market.  Imagine the simple effects (B&W,Sepia,X-Ray) that are in the Mac application Photobooth and now apply them to Photo Tweet.  The option to rotate or crop photos as well as adding speech bubbles on the actual image would be great!  So far I haven’t seen other applications going down this route and these options could add some more fun to the photos you tweet.

So in a way Photo Tweet is a disappointment in it’s current abilities but then again it doesn’t claim to do everything and it does what it claims perfectly.  Hopefully the application developer will see about further enhancing Photo Tweet to distinguish it from the countless Twitter applications out there and make it a must-have app for Twitter addicts.

Wallpaper Calendar App Review for the iPhone or iPod Touch

photo.jpgThis great App actually makes the locked screen on the iPhone and iPod Touch useful. It easily allows you to add a customisable calendar onto your chosen image!  Wallpaper Calendar retails at £1.19, which in my opinion is slightly expensive for what it is at the moment, but it has some good features with a simple easy to use interface.

There are 3 modes:

  1. Season Calendar- Set background changes every month
  2. Simple Calendar- Blank backgrounds
  3. My Calendar- (The most used mode) Use your own photos

Across all three modes you can customise and alter the appearance of the actual month display.  You can decide to show up to 6 months on the page however not only does it become very hard to read them, but it also totally blocks out your photo.  There are countless options to choose from with different colours and colour gradients but in all honesty the default colours are clear to see but there is always the option if you’re bored of white.  Other than that it is a very simple app but it gets the job done, and easily.

The major complaint against the first version of Wallpaper Calendar was that the output was blurry thus rendering the whole idea pointless. However this has been changed in the newest version and once you’ve finished, you use the built in screenshot function (pressing the power and home button simultaneously) to capture it. Then, as you normally would, you go to your Camera roll and select it as wallpaper.  I’ve found no bugs or problems in the new version and I find the interface clean and easy to use which is starting to get rare amongst apps now.  If I was going to improve anything it may be the removal of the simple calendar because I think the blank background is just not useful and also maybe the inclusion of a rotation tool using finger gestures so that the calendar isn’t just straight.  The reason behind this was to fit in with some photos where the calendar rotated might fit in better with the background and add a difference to the application.

So although the Wallpaper Calendar App is not a necessity, once you have it you can see its uses. I can’t remember the countless times I’ve unlocked my iPhone to go to the inbuilt calendar app just to see the date of the weekend.  Now it is so much simpler and all I have to do is look at the unlock screen. Really surprised Apple haven’t added options to put text or data on the unlock screen manually but at the moment Wallpaper Calendar accomplices that need and stops wasting our valuable time!

Manage Your Football Club iPhone/iPod Touch Review MYFC

photo.jpgWhen I heard this game was going to be released I just couldn’t contain myself.  A football manager game..on the go?? That was going to take up my whole life and I couldn’t wait! MYFC brings a clean, packed interface of countless options from transfers and finances to tactics and contracts while you take your football club to the top of the league! It’s out now for £5.99 in the App store, but think you’d be paying a lot more for a portable football manager on the DS or PSP…

Obviously the hardest part of bringing a football manager game to a touch screen platform like the iPhone is how you are going to get all the options into an easy to use interface.  What they’ve done is simple and intuitive to use.  All the the options are categorised in a small bar at the bottom of the screen with squad info and tactics in one, Transfers and contracts in one, League and cup information in one and finally the proceed button in another.  Then you just tap on one of these buttons and a pop up menu gives you the sub-categories and the actual options you want.  With this system the screen is never that cluttered and makes it fairly easy to get around once you get used to it. But as with any football manager game the first time you pick it up it feels as if you’ve been thrown into another world and you can easily get overcome with all the immense stats and options available.  The graphics are smooth, simple but work and they seem very similar to Sega’s Football Manager which is a good thing.  Remember this game is not about the graphics, but about the information and tactical ability to outwit your opponents.

The developer has done such a good job to get everything packed into the game. It’s not like Fifa Manager where you control merchandise and expanding your stadium, MYFC is the real deal where you control the team and assistants helping you.  The focus is winning trophies and you obviously get targets at the start of the season like avoiding relegation or qualifying for Europe.  There is nothing major missing in this game that you would definitely expect in a football management game and for a first release MYFC is amazing. Just wonder what they can do with updates! Like other football manager games, MYFC runs in a turn based fashion where you can either proceed to the next day or proceed to the next match.  This enables players who want to get really involved to go through each day checking and maintaining training whereas the players who want to just have a quick management experience can hop right over and play the next match.  It’s a great option and especially during the tense transfer window, the day option is a god send. Thank you!

Honestly there is so much to customise and change it is unbelievable.  Formation, aggression, style, free kick takers, penalty takers, corner takers, captain, positions etc. Obvioulsy if you don’t want to, you don’t have to fiddle with half of them but when you do it increases the satisfaction when you lead your team to victory because you believe you are personally responsible for your team’s success.  Changing style and kick takers is very simple and uses easy scroll bars and name selections to choose however the formation changes could do with some work.  In normal computer football manager games you choose a formation then usually drag players onto that formation.  However in MYFC you choose a formation, then have to remember where each shirt number is on the formation, then return to the squad list and change the order round correctly.  It may sound simple but you always forget which one goes where and you have to double check the right numbers because you don’t want a Defender playing in Attacking Midfield.  It just seems counter productive and I think this is the biggest let down in the game because I can’t be bothered to keep changing formation for different situations because I have to go through the whole hog of checking positions etc. I just want a quick, easy touch system where the empty formation appears and I tap on the position and then select the player I want to play in that position.  Even then showing the players name under the position would clarify who was who.  I know the developer has already got this technique because it is implemented on how to change the kick takers so why not put it in with formations?

As large as the information database is in MYFC it only covers the English league from the Premiership down to and including League Two.  You can manage anyone of those teams and you can really taste success when you bring up an underdog from League Two to be in Premier League!  However the problem is, unlike usual computer football manager games, you can’t buy a young Spanish kid to train and grow up into a wonderkid.  There is no foreign transfers in this game unfortunately although the software developer has said it may be a possibility if enough people demand it.  This doesn’t take away from the awe inspiring achievement of the game but it does mean you have to take a different strategy than you usually would.  If you don’t like the English football league this game may not be for you.

Another thing that is missing is a “search” facility.  The transfer system works fairly well but it can be hard to find a specific player you want.  You can either search the league table and choose the football club then the player, or you can change the filter on the transfer list page to include everyone from a specific position or ability.  It can take more time than necessary and I’m sure a simple text box input would benefit most managers so they can get that talent they want instead of being frustrated and missing out.  Also while on the topic of transfers, I was surprised there was no filter in the transfer list for players whose contract was running out.  I’ve seen many a time players who have joined other clubs on free transfers but I don’t understand how to find them before my opponents teams grasp the player.  Maybe it’s just me and I don’t know how to do it but if you can’t then it would bring another tactical edge to the game.

So in my opinion the best portable football manager for the iPhone to date, amazing technical ability (even if some of the players have a bit unrealistic scores) and an easy to use, clean appealing interface.  I have had no bugs or crashes so far and I have already devoted all my spare time to it.  If the developer keeps up with just fixing some of those negative points like the formation and player selection process and adding extra leagues, then this game will be totally unstoppable!
