White Incase Slider Case for iPhone 3G and 3GS Unboxing

IMG_0188.JPGNow I’ve been going on about it for a couple of months now, if not more, that I need a new iPhone case.  It’s been in a cheap transparent plastic one since last September and give it its dues, the phone has been protected well.  But it was getting scratched and I knew the time was near the end so I began scouting around for a replacement.  With recommendations from you guys and some close friends I went for the Incase range and the White Slider Case for the iPhone 3G.  Now yes I’ll admit it the RRP price of £25 did knock me back but I bit the bullet and got it.  Was it as good as I heard it was? Here are my first thoughts…

Ok so there isn’t an awful lot to talk about with the case, as the main discussion point is how well it protects the device and at the moment I haven’t had enough experience with it; but when I do I’ll get right back to you lot.  On the overall look of the device, I chose the White colour because I liked the clean contrast look compared to the black iPhone. Don’t worry though as there are many other colours available from bright green to grey and also a metallic colour range to satisfy your needs.  Obviously it has all the ports open so you can actually use the thing but there is sufficient protection around them and this is same around the whole iPhone.  When you look at it side on, it does make the iPhone thicker but then I guess how else are you going to protect it if you are sometimes clumsy like me? :)   As mine wasn’t from the metallic range it has a very smooth, you could say slippery, feel which is very nice but if you aren’t always aware it could probably slip out of your pocket.  The biggest advantage for me was a case that you could easily take off so I could dock the iPhone and this Incase does that perfectly.  You don’t understand how much easier (and tidier) it is jsut to dock the iPhone instead of finding the cable and laying it on the table…maybe it’s just me.

Overall at this initial stage I’m impressed with the Incase Slider Case and so far the quality is solid, so let us see how long it lasts the rigorous testing of daily use.

My Gadget of Year Mini-Review: iPhone 3G

As the end of 2008 approaches I’ve looked back at the years findings. There was definitely some interesting electronics out there but none have affected me more than the iPhone 3G. Albeit only having it for quarter of a year it has changed my whole day to day work. But it’s definitely not perfect and some simple errors on Apple’s part has brought down the product in my eyes and it is a shame these ruined a near perfect product.

I’m going to keep this all on video today as some of what I mention is written up in my full review iPhone 3G 16gb Verdict.  After you check that out, I’ve highlighted some new points here on the video so don’t forget to watch it and comment!

Changing Sim Card but keeping the same number on O2?

Photo-0035#1.jpgI’ve been a loyal O2 Pay as you Go user for over 5 years and I still believe they have the best service in the UK.  When I got my iPhone I wanted to keep the same mobile number I’d been using for the past 3 years because it was an easy memorable number as well as not having the problem of telling everyone that my number had changed.  I could have carried on with my old sim card but unfortunately mine was so old (when was 3 years not out of date with technology) it would not support the 3G network and would only be capable of reaching EDGE speeds.  With this in mind and the fact I just bought an iPhone 3G I went and got a new O2 sim card which would support it..hopefully.

Picture 1.pngWell it did but I was still stuck with the problem of having this random new number which I didn’t want.

Step in O2’s website – https://www.o2.co.uk/apps/help/help?qid=29&q1=22

On this simple form all you need to do is enter the last date you topped up and some numbers contained on both the new and old sim cards and that’s it. Simply wait a while, I left it overnight, then pop in your new sim card into your phone.  Once O2 have made the switch your new sim card should have your old balance on it and also your old number.  I tested it quickly by phoning home and vice versa to see which numbers popped up and sure enough it was my old number on a new sim card with no extra cost. Oh and your old sim card will get deactivated and no longer usable.

I thank O2 for providing this easy online free service so I don’t have to waste time or money phoning up a representative and talk for half an hour while I struggle to get my point accross. Nice one.

The Verdict: iPhone 3G 16GB Review

100_2181.JPGAfter initially getting my iPhone 3G and its first impressions I spent time playing around and tweaking it to my settings and requirements.  I’ve had experience with smart phones and PDAs before so I knew what standard I was expecting before I used it.  Also when I looked at the capability’s of the device I also knew there was nothing brand new which I hadn’t seen before on a device. With all the hype surrounding Apple’s iPhone I couldn’t wait to truly delve deep into the device.

Design

100_2179.JPGFrom the pictures you can see that without doubt this is a stunning looking device with it’s smooth curves and shiny surfaces.  With the new addition of a plastic shiny back compared to its silver aluminium of last years model it really completes the look of the device.  The downside of this is the bigger potential to scratch the back and this has been found by many users so I totally recommend you never take it out unless you have a case on it.  Another saviour is the change and removal of the recessed audio port so now you can use any headphones in them. Finally something is fixed which Apple should never have put in it.  The 3.5″ screen is the same size as last years rendition and still has that real crisp sharp image that you want on a portable device.  It is truly amazing how good movies and games look on it and Apple have done a good job in maintaining this quality across all their products.

In built GPS

100_2186.JPGThis iPhone has built in GPS to assist the wireless location based service that proved popular on the first iPhone and iPod Touch.  From my experience it can be temperamental however I believe this is a system flaw and should be rectified in the next update.  When it works it seems to pick up my position quite correctly and refreshes position every few seconds which is as good as an external bluetooth GPS unit. The biggest flaw with the GPS is that it is expensive to use on the go as the Google Maps need to be downloaded from the internet every time – there is no offline maps.  Tomtom the famous GPS maps company are working on an iPhone version of their award winning navigation software and these will feature maps so you don’t have to go online every time.

Camera

In my opinion the worst piece of hardware that Apple has put in the iPhone is this measly 2 Megapixel Camera.  On the market it seems industry standard is coming onto 3 Megapixel for standard phones and for the iPhone to be the best it’s certainly lagging behind.  It benefits from GPS geotagging which comes as a nice option but it still doesn’t make up for the lack of video recording capabilities.  Unfortunately I don’t see Apple fixing this until the next generation of iPhones and it was something I really looked forward too.  The idea of this mobile device where all my media could be viewed and taken is not complete and the 2 Megapixel camera is sub standard today.

Apps

To be honest the user interface is the same on any of the three devices: iPhone, iPod Touch and iPhone 3G if you have the newest software update.  With this in mind I am not going to bore you with information about the supplied apps but what I will tell you is that they won’t be enough for most users and you’ll be buying and downloading new apps (including free ones) from the iTunes store very quickly.  I’ve already done a lot of this, it’s fun in itself, and I’ve video reviewed a couple of paid games on the site here.

Conclusion

So the iPhone 3G is a marvellous piece of gadgetry and will definitely be one of the must haves of 2008 despite its few flaws and with Apples meticulous attention to detail lets hope they roll out some 100_2171.JPGupdates to solve these little niggles.  I think if you’ve got an iPhone first generation I see it as a hard case in convincing yourself to get this baby, there is not that much difference I believe to warrant paying for an upgrade.  On the other hand if you’re a brand new iPhone pursuer then this is the time to jump in.  You have to have one to realise its full potential and I think you’ll have as good a time as I have.  Well I hope this phone lasts me for over 3 years and make me more organised as well as make my day to day life easier.

iPhone 3G 16GB Unboxed with first impressions

100_2186.JPGA year ago I thought the original iPhone looked bulky and not necessary as I had a 30GB iPod video and an o2 XDA. However since then I’ve sold my XDA and my iPod was involved in an accident and now ceases to function so with my situation changed my outlook on the iPhone followed suit.  The ease of not carrying an iPod and phone/pda separately was too big appeal to turn down and with the release of the new iPhone 3G my mind was made up. With the two variants of 8GB and 16GB I would have liked a bigger capacity, I was spoilt for space with my old iPod so when I downsized I knew I would have to be more picky with my music. As a result I opted for the 16GB model thinking I would fill about 40% with music 30% with videos/films and the last 30% with applications or other data.  That was my plan anyway…I’ll see how it worked out in the full review next week.

100_2187.JPGNow I’m not going to go through the labourous task of unboxing it by describing every single plug and cable that comes with it as I’m sure you’ve watched enough of them on youtube over the last month. You can see it quickly done in the video accompanying this blog post.

When I first took it out of the box I was amazed at how light it felt; I had expected it to weigh a couple of my old iPods but Apple have distributed the weight well and you won’t feel like you have a brick in your pocket.  This links with the new back curved design which psychologically makes you think its thinner but in fact it is slightly deeper than the original iPhone. I agree with many people who say that this plastic backing is prone to scratching and that is why I’m going to have a case on it 24/7 although its a shame to cover it as I believe its the best bit of the exterior. I’m in a bit of rush so I’ve kept in quick for now but the full review will be more in depth…

From what I’ve done so far with iTunes I have had no trouble syncing all my music and videos over so I have been scrolling over the App store for hours.  There are truly hundreds of Apps and with a majority being free there truly is something for everyone.  I’m going to continue my app quest and review some on my site and I’ll also post up a detailed review of the iPhone 3G next week.
