The Verdict: Exspect iPhone Protective Gaming Grip Review

Ever since game developers came to the Apple iPhone portable platform, people have been hampered by the touch controls for some games.  I’ve found especially for driving games and where you need to hold the device in the landscape orientation, problems can arise.  The Exspect iPhone Protective Gaming Grip is one on the market giving the device a perfect case aimed at the gaming market.  Does it withstand the use for gaming then or does it just get in the way?

Well the case really changes the way you play games full stop.  It is a mile ahead of using my other case, the Incase Slider for instance.  The Exspect Protective gaming grip is ergonomically brilliant and the grips are in the right place at the rear of the case.  I just have not seen any other iPhone aimed cases like this and is adequate for gaming on the go or at home.  Another advantage is that as much as it is a gaming case, it also satisfies the basic needs of an iPhone user as well.  It fits both the iPhone 3G/3GS as well as the iPod Touch 2G.  So with this, the gaming grip also has all the buttons/ports accessible thus not hampering your demands.  When you feel the case it is lightweight however there is significant reinforcement on the back especially at the ‘leg’ areas but it is debatable how much of a challenge this would provide to a proper iPhone hard case.  Saying that I think it would do a good job the majority of the time.

Obviously this case is aimed at the gaming market and these grips can mean that in everyday use it can be uncomfortable to carry around.  For instance in trousers, especially jeans, the case adds larger thickness making it stand out more.  It doesn’t really add weight just the fact is nearly doubles the thickness of the iPhone which may not be really wanted but thats the pay off you take for getting a better gaming experience.

So the Exspect iPhone Protective Gaming Grip does exactly what it needs to and that is to make gaming more comfortable and easier on the device.  There are the limitations mainly in the added size to the iPhone but if you are after that extra gaming dimension then for between £5 and £15 you can try this special device.

The Top 10 Video games of 2009

2009 was a great year for gaming and so after being asked by a member of the community I put together this video showing, in my opinion, the best games of 2009. Any missed out? Some you thought shouldn’t have been there? Let us know in the comment box below!  Btw these games are in no particular order!

Assassins Creed 2

Sequel to the award winning Assassins Creed from 2007, this time the setting is renaissance Italy. The game offers a wider variety of mission types and new RPG elements like purchasing armour and weapons.  A must buy from 2009.

DiRT 2

Growing on the new engine from DiRT 1, DiRT 2 in my opinion, gives the best rallying and off road driving experience available.  Stunning graphics combined with an amazing cockpit view make you feel right in the action.  A lean towards a more arcadey feel may not please everyone but it sure makes this title a lot of fun!

Batman Arkham Asylum

A huge surprise from 2009, Batman Arkham Asylum renovates fighting mechanics and is arguably the best Batman game to date.  Take on the power of the dark knight as you complete objectives inside the Asylum either by stealth or just brute force.  Definitely worth a try for everyone interested in action games!

Dragon Age: Origins

Developed by Bioware, who have huge experience in the RPG market with the successful Mass Effect, Dragon Age is a dark heroic fantasy story.  Create your character and lead him/her to victory.  If you love RPGs and like the fantasy slightly magical world, then you’ll be interested.

Left 4 Dead 2

Coming only a year after the acclaimed original Left 4 Dead, the quality of this release comes as a surprise.  The sequel is still set during the aftermath of an apocalyptic pandemic as you and three survivors fight throughout the city to defeat the endless hordes of zombies.  The game is a great laugh both offline and online with mates.  Take all your anger out on those zombies right now!

Resident Evil 5

Now running it’s seventh game, Resident Evil continues to involve you.  The survival horror third person shooter looks great graphically as Chris Redfield and Sheva Alomar investigate a terrorist threat in Africa.  If you’ve ever played any of the Resident Evil games then put this one right up there.

Killzone 2

Even after that controversy about rendered/actual gameplay showed on a teaser a few years ago, Killzone 2 manages to beat the original easily.  You fight on the home world of the Helghast and lets just say the graphics are mouth watering accompanying a frenzied campaign.  Oh and don’t forget the addictive multiplayer.

The Sims 3

Still going strong, The Sims 3 brings the series its strongest version yet.  We’re still obsessed with controlling our little Sims lives and this version is no different.  A nice UI overhaul and a good focus on travelling around a town makes the game feel less narrow and more than just watching your Sim watch TV in one house.

Halo 3: ODST

Although it runs on the Halo 3 engine and also the name, don’t expect ODST to be as easy a ride as it was with Master Chief.  This time you play a soldier who is more vulnerable and you have to play this game more tactically.  Navigating the streets of New Mombassa provides a wanted change to galaxy moving Master Chief.  And for a great multiplayer experience don’t forget Firefight mode.

Modern Warfare 2

Undoubtedly the most anticipated and deserving game of 2009 is the successor to Call of Duty 4. Modern Warfare is brilliant all over and for the most part satisfies the hype.  Yes the single player is captivating and really makes you feel in the thick of it but multiplayer rocks.  Amazing.  No other words.  If you don’t at least try this game this year you are missing out!

Peace out.

The Verdict: Sennheiser HD 201 Headphones

With my work on a radio station increasing I am in more need to do music work at home so it was a good idea to grab some new headphones.  It made sense so I wouldn’t irritate other people nearby….or it was that I wanted to feel like a DJ at home…. So where better to go than Sennheiser? At only £12.99 these headphones not only come at a low price but also don’t compromise on quality.  These provide the perfect step up from starter headphones and give a real depth to the sound!

The build quality is solid but you may find it quite light and cheap on the silver casing of the ear cushions compared to the rather luxurious cushion that rests on your head.  It comes with a cable that is nearly 2.5 m long, way way longer than necessary, with a standard 3.5mm jack and a 6.3mm adapter so you’ll never be caught short whichever connection you need.  Concerning the quality of the sound I can recognise good sound when I hear it but even though I’m not an audiophile,  I instantly heard increased clarity through the headphones and even parts of songs I hadn’t heard before.  For instance I was playing an F1 game and when you go over the corners of the track you can hear the individual bumps whereas just with the computer speakers I could not.  This increased depth of sound really helps to improve your overall sound experience! I’m not going to tout them as the best headphones ever as they are simply not, however for much of the money you can spend on headphones, for only £12.99 you will not be able to beat these Sennheiser marvels.

The Verdict: Backup everything on your Facebook? Why not use SocialSafe!

Screen shot 2010-01-14 at 16.04.47Now I’ve covered some software before on how to download all your tagged photos and albums from Facebook but that wasn’t a full service.  There was still all your data such as wall posts and friend information left flying around on the Internet. What about all that stuff? Well it can be hard but after recently trying out some new software called SocialSafe, we can all rest in peace knowing most of our data can be backed up safely.

SocialSafe is a multi-platform (Windows,Mac and unofficially Linux) application for £1.99 running on the Adobe AIR platform. It consists of a clean interface with very few buttons pretty much giving you the option to download the data and then scroll across all of it.  Because SocialSafe has a very simple premise -- to build a timed backup of your Facebook data, there is no need for fancy buttons and countless menu screens and this is where SocialSafe excels. For most of you all you will need to do is load up the application and press “Download.”  Gosh I love simple applications.

If you’ve ever used Mac OS X’s feature of Snow Leopard then you’ll get a similar feeling here because SocialSafe gives you the ablitiy to effectively scroll through time as you’ve made these backups to see how you’ve changed.  It really does open up a new window cataloguing your life in an easy way. It saves your status updates (the first time it will go back just over a month depending on how statuses you’ve made) as well as your uploaded photos, friends and your profile information.  What is great about the status updates is it also saves the replies your friends made so you can relive those discussions when you look back at it again in the future.  To really make the best out of this application you need to remember to backup regularly so you can build up a good constructive image of your changes in life.

However there are restrictions to how it is backed up.  For instance although all the photos are downloaded and presented in a beautiful interface you cannot drag and drop any photo onto the desktop or save any of them at all.  Surely as you’ve downloaded your photos there should be an easy way to save them somewhere else and edit them to your desire. I find this is where the developers could really expand and take this application to the next level.  The ability to mass download all the photos from a specific backup and even better just the newly added photos as SocialSafe already distinguishes when new ones are made.  Obviously this won’t be as important with photos you’ve already uploaded to Facebook and leans more towards tagged photos however there is nothing wrong with adding the option for people. While we are on the topic of photos SocialSafe does not record your tagged photos. Now this isn’t their fault as they’ve recently had to suspend the feature and I believe it’s due to the grey area between who owns the photos etc but SocialSafe are hoping to find a way around this.  The ability to backup friends I think is one of the most valuable areas of this application.  Not only does it record the addition of new friends but it also records their page link so all you need to do is click on them and you’re taken to their page -- perfect if something happens to your account and you lose everything!

‘My Profile’ is the last button in the menu bar and simply records the information from your ‘My Info’ tab on your Facebook profile page regarding birthday, relationship status etc.  Although not entirely important if you continue to backup regularly you can see as your relationships change and maybe your favourite activities. Ok you probably don’t need to backup this data but if you’re one of those people who writes a lot about their favourite films/music then this will save you tediously typing it all again. I wish I’d had it before as it would have saved so much time…

So Socialsafe isn’t an entire backup solution in it’s current state in the sense that if you lose your Facebook you can very simply restore everything to it within a short period of time. SocialSafe is more in an element of its own, offering something unique with the ability to effectively scroll through your life in pictures and conversations.  That’s not saying its a bad thing, far from it, at only £1.99 you should definitely have a look as it is in my opinion the best all round service out there. You can get different pieces of software doing separate things but SocialSafe gets a big thumbs up from me for putting it together in one application. If they can just offer some download capabilities so we are not totally restricted to the software as well as hopefully successfully working out the tagged image issue, then there will be no need to look anywhere else! So don’t leave your Facebook data defenceless on the web, make sure you back it up now!

The Verdict: Short ‘The Saboteur’ Game Review

I was lucky enough to get The Saboteur for the Xbox 360 for Christmas. This final game for Pandemic Studios has only just come out and is in a sense underrated. A mix of GTA and Assassins Creed in 1940s Nazi occupied Paris sums up this game in a nutshell. With a good storyline and loads of Nazi buildings to blow up, this game will last for a while
