Air Mouse Pro for the iPhone/iPod Touch – Remote Control App

photo.jpgIf you work in an office environment you’ve probably played with a Powerpoint clicker remote allowing you walk around the room proudly while you click away wowing your audience with your presentation. Now my point being is that I like, no I LOVE the feeling of standing up and controlling the computer. This leads me onto this app which you can use on Windows or Mac OS X and remotely control the mouse and keyboard. I don’t know why but I feel really powerful controlling it with just my finger…

Anyway it’s called Air Mouse Pro and it’s available in the iTunes App store for only £3.49. You also need to download some free server software for either platform to install on your computer first available from http://www.mobileairmouse.com then with the simplest setup ever you’re off and away. The app on the iPhone has a mouse like feature which uses the built in accelerometer to move the pointer around your screen and to be honest they’ve done a good effort but I’ve found it too fiddly to use.  However there is the traditional trackpad, like on a laptop, available which I use and performs gestures like on a Mac so scrolling down on web pages is a breeze! A keyboard is also there to enter in information although I seriously recommend actually using a real keyboard if you’re writing more than a couple of lines; but it all works fine even with a preview on the iPhone’s screen to let you know what you’re typing. I guess this is a handy extra if the actual monitor is too far away to see!

That’s all I really need it for but I was amazed at how much this application packs and yet functions fully. After fiddling with some of the buttons there are shortcut keys for all the common applications like the ones you see on some multimedia keyboards nowadays.  When you have Media Player open you can skip tracks or in Firefox you can refresh the page or go back/forward easily.  They are a nice added extra and for people using it as a dedicated media device probably more important but I don’t mind using the time to move my finger on the trackpad to the refresh button because I enjoy the experience itself so much!  There are other perks available and one is when I connect it to a Mac, the Mac keyboard comes up and on a Windows PC vice versa so you always have the proper set of tools! Congratulations to the developer for being so logical, you’d be surprised how many other applications don’t include these features.

I must stress though that this is NOT a remote client and it does not in any way actually show you your computer screen.  All it is, is an imitation of a mouse and keyboard which works just like any other on your computer so is perfect for making presentations or using it on a media centre dedicated machine etc. What’s nice is the amount of updates that Air Mouse has had and they’re not just bug fixes, I’m talking about decent feature plus updates. I’m looking forward to using this application when I desperately need it and will save me wasting time finding another keyboard!

The best way to convert DVD Films for your iPhone,iPod Touch,Xbox,PSP,PS3

Picture 1.pngThe media revolution continues today and video is being embraced around the world shown in the success of YouTube and other video streaming sites like the BBC iPlayer.  This has spread to consumer devices with the likes of Archos and Apple.  The iPhone and iPod Touch have revolutionised the control interface and capabilities of portable devices but due to Apple’s top down restrictions many customers have problems copying video across.  Well thankfully there are loads of software options to choose from but which one is the easiest and best to use?

I’ve tried several leading pieces of software and a simple Google search will bring up tons of shareware to try.  Here is where I’ve finally come to a decision for the most reliable in the form of Handbrake for Windows, Linux and Mac.  It’s freeware and boasts many functions including:

  • Rip from DVD straight to a compatible movie format for your iPhone or iPod Touch and many other devices
  • Convert from VIDEO TS folders to a compatible movie format for your iPhone or iPod Touch and many other devices
  • The ability to queue up several jobs

Although the user interface isn’t a work of art like many pieces of software I’ve tried are, the job works and offers a wide range of output options not only the iPhone format.  These presets easily allow you to convert your video/DVD to formats including the rarer PSP, PS3, Xbox 360 and Apple TV.  Where this application really packs is its features and ability to get the job done and that’s exactly where it counts.  I’ve converted many of my personal DVDs through Handbrake and when converting from my ripped VIDEO TS files it took about 3 hours in total.

All you have to do is simply tell Handbrake what to convert, then choose the iPhone or iPod Touch preset on the right and finally where to save it! Simple. When it is saved just import to iTunes and sync to your device and you’ll be able to enjoy it without having to be taped to your television screen. So I hope you are able to back up and put your films onto your iPhone as easily as I have with the freeware Handbrake.

Removing the Beer Widget?

Have you noticed in some of your Beer cans that after you’ve drunk it, the can rattles? It’s a floating widget which is meant to (and in my experience does) produce a finer, smooth head on the bear and keep it carbonated.  I wonder how this affects the recycling though?

For more information I’ve found this useful article at http://www.thebrewsite.com/2008/02/22/canned-beer-week-why-beer-widgets.php

GridBuster for the iPhone or iPod Touch Review

photo.jpgHere’s another App review to sink your teeth into, this time it’s a casual but addictive puzzle game that does have a bit of strategy.  GridBuster is only 59p and provides something a bit different from your normal applications.  You have to move the blue ball from the top left of the screen to the bottom right where it is aptly named “Goal.”  To do this you simply touch your path which have points on from 50 to 100 and 150 and this is where the strategy comes in.  You only have so many points to complete each level so you have to work out a path which will allow you to get to the finish line also under a time limit! See…I told you it was challengingly different.

I must admit the first few levels are easy and in my opinion pointless to play as you never run out of points or time 99% of the time and level 4 is where it really begins.  The time is decreased and you now actually have to choose to either bite the bullet and go through some high pointed 150 blocks or go around them taking more time but less points. This bit of puzzle gameplay isn’t rocket science though but for some people they’ll enjoy it and others will just tap quickly and if it doesn’t work they’ll just try again. Simple and caters for everyone.

So with the biggest flaw being a lack of touch responsiveness now fixed, the game is now playable. Which is great as it works perfectly and seems really smooth but then highlights the next problem in the game.  It never ends. You can keep trying each level, they are more like difficulties rather than progressing from one level to another, and the score will keep increasing as you do well but there is no way to record your score.  No leaderboard and it just seems this simple addition would make the whole game have a purpose.  Otherwise there is no way to compare with yourself or your friends who got the best score and sort of lacks any motivation to replay the game.  This brings up another issue though, shouldn’t the game end? There should be like a 3 minute total time limit each time you try so that there is a fair base for everyone’s scores because otherwise it would just be whoever plays the game for the longest would get the highest score which is pointless.

Saying that they are fairly simple issues and hopefully can be resolved without hassle which would definitly improve the replay value of the game.  Don’t get me wrong it has a good concept and is fairly addictive with the randomly generated levels. It’s actually one of the first iPhone apps I’ve got which requires me to think a bit more instead of just pressing buttons, it’s never a bad thing to stimulate the brain.  For 59p it’s a nice find but is let down by a few non-existant features that should be compulsory but as it is a recent release I’m sure updates will come.

Update: I have heard from the developer that there will be an online leader board in version 1.02. Result!
