You’ve all been to an IMAX cinema or alternative where the film you’re watching is in 3D and so requires you to wear some funky glasses. Now I recently got some free in some spam mail so thought I’d have a look around on the net to test them out.
After constructing the cheap glasses I found some samples to watch, I literally watched loads but so many either failed or were just less than impressive. Many people had tried to make their own as all you need is to split red and blue outlines to a specific gap and it should work however I could see many people hadn’t followed the instructions properly…
See this example from YouTube which I found. The best bit was with the bullets and the cartridge cases after he fired the gun. If you have any 3D glasses why not give it a go and see if they work for you, if you don’t have any have fun trying to watch it.
However after testing some samples it became clear there were too many parameters which I had to fulfil before I got the IMAX type 3D video. They recommend you are in the dark as well as far enough way so the 3D effect is calibrated correctly with your glasses. So unless you have your own cinema with a 50″ screen and the ability to stand at least 8m back in pitch black you’re not going to enjoy the experience that well at home. That being said the technology still works but its apparent weakness is easily shown unless you have the optimum conditions.
As a big fan of flight simulators and once holding the dream of flying in the sky in reality I was looking forward to the release of X-Plane for the iPhone. Now I’ll stop you there, yes it has been out for a long time already however a recent version has just been updated to 9.0.3 and I finally saw there was enough for me to warrant a purchase.
Straight away I am impressed on what Laminar Research have done to get this thing down to the small screen. I’ll run over the options later but the frame rate is marvellous, no jumps at all, and the whole input system seems fluid. You control the throttle and flaps with two easy sliders at each edge of the screen with two buttons for brakes and gear. Finally the aileron and elevator surfaces are controlled just by tilting the device. So if you want to fly up, you pitch your iPhone back and to go right, tilt it right. It’s that simple! With this though comes its first problem. Anyone can pick it up and give it a go but it’s only the seasoned professionals who will be able to control it 100%, it will take a bit of practice if you have unsteady hands, trust me.
You can see that a lot of work has gone into the customisation options of this app. You can change the weather, turbulence, time, weight, it’s all there however most of the casual consumers won’t bother changing any of these. But it’s there and that’s what’s important. The choice of 4 aircraft may seem small but to be honest after my brief time with the game I can’t see much difference between them apart from the speed and look. See more information on the settings in the video review below.
The graphics are a mixed bunch, with great model details on the aircraft compared to some lacklustre textures on the mountains and terrain. However this doesn’t really bother me as I understand to keep the frame rate smooth and not overstress the iPhone processor there has to be some give. None the less it’s still a good look but then you notice there is absolutely nothing else there. Just two runways and some mountains. With no other buildings or aircraft around you really feel empty and if only they could add a few more objects to the world it would make it more “real.” Now as the iPhone will never be able to support a full on flight simulator I think Laminar should take a fun slant to this game and add some missions to occupy pilots like fly from A to B in 4 mins. What about a low level chase through the depths of the mountain? It’ll be like Top Gun and Independence Day = MEGA!
Sorry for the short review but X-Plane is either a lover or a hater for its price of £5.99. At the moment thought I don’t think this will reach out to the casual gamers and its features are orienteered towards aviation enthusiasts. I’d recommend it though and lets hope new updates are coming to continue supporting this ground-breaking app!
Hi all, I thought I would come over and thank you for your increased support on my Youtube channel. Since I started this site two months ago (yes it wasn’t that long ago) I have had over 27,000 new video views on my YouTube videos. I would also like to continue the push for subcribers, it’s really easy, just press the subscribe button on my YouTube channel or next to any of my videos and you’re done! Then you don’t have to go trawling through the internet to see my latest videos as you’ll get an email every week linking directly to all my new videos. You know it makes sense!
That’s enough publicity from me – short and sweet.
Another game from the iTunes App store brings the table hockey game found at your local bar or amusement arcade right to your pocket. With the touch interface you have to keep your finger down on the screen all the time to control your puck. This means you won’t be playing this game for an extended period of time as it is just too uncomfortable to do so. With this in mind I would try the free version to start with, which contains all the features of the full version with ads showing after 5 minutes -- see how the ad system works in the video below.
The Wi-Fi multiplayer is also promoted on this game but; either it’s not fully working or nobody is using it as so far when I’ve tested it I haven’t been able to connect to anyone. This was a bit of a disappointment as I was really looking forward to playing against someone online on my iPhone. how cool would that be? Well I’d have to wait a bit longer to find out…The one bug I found with this was sometimes the puck followed your finger and got stuck meaning the game couldn’t play, a simple menu visit and resume play fixed the problem so it’s not serious but not great when showing off to friends.
It is definitely an interesting formula but I don’t think it puts it into the most wanted games. Don’t get me wrong it has been well made and you can see the effort which has gone into it but at the moment I think it lacks something. Maybe after a few bug fixes and some time of single player tournament it might prolong your attention span. Also if the Wi-Fi multiplayer kicks off then it might just warrent playing this game but until then I’d give this a pass.
This free app is only going to be required by a select minority, if you’re into any type of maths studies then surely a graphical calculator is a must. To save you buying a dedicated expensive device you can get this for free to help you. Obviously you need an iPhone or iPod Touch though…
You can enter in four different equations with a range of options; so not just a simple y=4x graph. As well as displaying these equations graphically you can also see where they meet and the x,y co-ordinates of the relevant equations. It may sound like a foreign language to you but it will definitely make mathematics easier.
