Crash Bandicoot Nitro Kart 3D for the iPhone/iPod Touch

So after looking through Apple’s iTunes App Store I thought Crash Bandicoot looked the best racer for casual racing. I was looking for something fun and easy to play but also that I could pick up and play any time I wanted for instance on the bus or waiting in a long queue.  It cost £5.99 from the App Store and was downloaded and synced to my iPhone within 30 seconds, so far I was happy with the process and had high hopes of the games use of the accelerometer.

After playing it a couple of times I can say the game was built from the ground up for the iPhone, it was not just a simple port over with restricted controls.  The graphics are great for a mobile platform although this is less important compared to the gameplay where it truly shines.  During the races the game uses constant forward drive meaning you only have to turn the kart left or right, now you might think this makes the game harder as you won’t be able to slow down before corners but since this is in essence an arcade game it is not necessary.  You are able to reverse however this is a last option and in my usage never needed. With the controls so simple it is easy for anyway to jump in, it’s like the Wii of mobile phones and makes the true gaming experience even better.

A slightly annoying point is the arcadey music, now I don’t mind living some retro style but after playing it for so long it can get annoying but this can easily be turned off or you can listen to your own tunes while you play.  With that niggle sorted the game has very little flaws, some people have reported having slight lag or slow down with the frame rate however so far my game has flowed perfectly so whether it’s just certain units or old versions I don’t know. I’m impressed with the load times as well with minimal wastage so you can just jump in as soon as possible where in the past mobile games have had extremely uncomfortable loading sessions. With the accelerometer comes the problem of how sensitive you want it and many games on the App store are fixed at a certain limit but here on Nitro Kart they have allowed an option to vary it. As some people will turn the device more than others I congratulate them for putting this in the options and hope other developers take heed and use it in future releases, it makes the game open and enjoyable to a wider range of people.

Nitro Kart 3D combines an 8 mission story mode, 3 four leg race cups, a time trial mode and a quick race mode. The downside of this game is there is not much to complete and the 5 unlockable racers are quick and easy but then where the game does shine is in its ability to literally pick up and play whenever you want. Regardless of the fact you might have completed the game weeks ago you’ll still pick it up and do a quick race and be surprised by the different routes each time.

Did anyone ever use a GAMEPORT 2000?

Photo-0025#1.jpgWhile I was filtering through the attic I found a couple of interesting items, the most being this brand new unboxed, unused Gameport 2000.  Now besides the fact its the year 2008 it still looked kinda cool and with marketing phrases like “The Next-Generation Gamecard” and “Unlimited Speed Capability” who was I to argue.  It only got better when I opened it up, where I saw what looked like a pc card which had only just come out of the factory.  Now even though this card was old I saw features on it which I’d never seen before and for all I knew without the box could have been a future product. Sounds strange but it just seemed like a weird product.Photo-0022#1.jpg

It was made by Suncom Technologies in Taiwan and I think from about 1993. There is no information on it what so ever on the Internet except the first result in google and even that is someones aimless question which didn’t get answered 6 years ago. It seems they have disappeared and obviously weren’t a major hit.  It’s a Joystick to PC dual connection card and I quote “supports 4-axis joysticks like Suncom’s Flightmax.” If I had a spare port and it was compatible I’d install it just to see what it was like. It even touts “NO INSTALLATION SOFTWARE REQUIRED” you don’t see that much nowadays on a Windows product – how times have changed….

I’ll probably be throwing it away shortly anyway but it seems such a shame when it has never been used. Oh well, thats how fast technology and electronics are progressing in this day and age.

How to get free iPhone Ringtones and install them

Whenever anyone gets a new phone they have to go through the countless customisable options like changing sound settings.  The ringtone is one of the most important ones and when with friends they can either make you feel cool or a bit of an idiot if you forgot to change it from the default sad ringtone.  It can be awkward so just change it to something people will recognise and get yourself a proper ringtone -- it’s a really simple process.  For the iPhone there is an extra step to transfer ringtones because instead of sending them to the phone you just save them in iTunes and then next time they sync it’s done.Picture 1.png

1. Go to www.audiko.net

Picture 2.png2. Search for the track that you want and see if the site has it. If it doesn’t you can either go back to the homepage and upload the song yourself to clip the sample for a ringtone or you’ll have to download another track.

3. Once you have the clip you want, simply scroll down and see “Download for iPhone” Right click on the link and save it where you can easily find it.

Picture 4.png4. Open up iTunes and add the downloaded file to your library, when completed it will appear in a separate category on the left -- Ringtones.  If it doesn’t: then either the file was corrupt so try downloading another one, or it didn’t import so quickly try this again.

5. When your iPhone is connected to iTunes make sure on the Ringtones tab it is selected to “sync all” and then the ringtones will be sent across to the phone.

6. Right so now you have them on your phone all you need to do is set them up! Go to Settings on the home screen, Sounds,Ringtones and scroll down and select your custom ringtone. Done!

That’s it! No longer will you be embarrassed to receive a call within a crowd! There are literally thousands of tunes to choose from but be wary of short poor quality versions of the tune. I believe audiko.net is a great free site, built well so we can simply get what we want with no hassle, lets hope they keep it up.

iPhone 3G 16GB Unboxed with first impressions

100_2186.JPGA year ago I thought the original iPhone looked bulky and not necessary as I had a 30GB iPod video and an o2 XDA. However since then I’ve sold my XDA and my iPod was involved in an accident and now ceases to function so with my situation changed my outlook on the iPhone followed suit.  The ease of not carrying an iPod and phone/pda separately was too big appeal to turn down and with the release of the new iPhone 3G my mind was made up. With the two variants of 8GB and 16GB I would have liked a bigger capacity, I was spoilt for space with my old iPod so when I downsized I knew I would have to be more picky with my music. As a result I opted for the 16GB model thinking I would fill about 40% with music 30% with videos/films and the last 30% with applications or other data.  That was my plan anyway…I’ll see how it worked out in the full review next week.

100_2187.JPGNow I’m not going to go through the labourous task of unboxing it by describing every single plug and cable that comes with it as I’m sure you’ve watched enough of them on youtube over the last month. You can see it quickly done in the video accompanying this blog post.

When I first took it out of the box I was amazed at how light it felt; I had expected it to weigh a couple of my old iPods but Apple have distributed the weight well and you won’t feel like you have a brick in your pocket.  This links with the new back curved design which psychologically makes you think its thinner but in fact it is slightly deeper than the original iPhone. I agree with many people who say that this plastic backing is prone to scratching and that is why I’m going to have a case on it 24/7 although its a shame to cover it as I believe its the best bit of the exterior. I’m in a bit of rush so I’ve kept in quick for now but the full review will be more in depth…

From what I’ve done so far with iTunes I have had no trouble syncing all my music and videos over so I have been scrolling over the App store for hours.  There are truly hundreds of Apps and with a majority being free there truly is something for everyone.  I’m going to continue my app quest and review some on my site and I’ll also post up a detailed review of the iPhone 3G next week.

Canon FS100 different quality settings? Differences examined

Most camcorders come with a countless number of confusing settings for consumers to fiddle with, one of these is the video quality.  My Canon FS100 has three variations -- SP,LP and XP. These each use different bit rates with SP at 3mbps, LP at 6mbps and XP at 9mpbs. Obviously the bigger the bit rate the better quality video. Ever since I had it I have stuck it at XP because I am a firm believer in good quality video but I have wondered how much of a difference it really makes.

To test this I have shot the same footage with the camcorder simply changing the quality setting each time, I have labelled each video so you can compare them like by like and see the difference.  After I looked at the footage, which must be seen in High Quality on Youtube otherwise it’s not that good, I struggled to see any massive difference between each one. You can just make out the slightly sharper image of the XP compared to the rest but I’ll leave you to decide.  I’ll still carry on using the XP setting because it will make me feel better but whether it really makes a difference -- at least on a small screen it doesn’t.  It may make a bigger impact on a 40″ LCD TV but for my needs that is not important.
